The 22nd SummerJazzCycleTour takes place on 30 August. A musical cycling adventure through the beautiful scenery of the Reitdiep valley. Performances take place in gorgeous medieval churches and farmer's barns. The cycle fest offers an internationally varied programme of new jazz and improvised music. A test and tried concept to explore new jazz on bike.
In this edition women in improvised music are given special attention. These women improvise in different ways: with unusual instruments, such as Hermine Deurloo (chromatic harmonica), Hélène Breschand (harp), Tatiana Koleva (marimba) and Katie Down (glasses). With string instruments: Marine Horbaczewski (cello), Corrie van Binsbergen (guitar) and the Pavadita Tango String Quartet. And of course with voices: Maggie Nicols, Ute Wasserman, Emilie Lesbros, Diana Miranda, Luanda Casella and Felicity Provan, who will largely be heard on cornet. There is also an all female mini brass band: Brassed Off.
Cycling route 1 offers you the opportunity to meet a great many of these women musicians.
It's hard to summarize 27 concerts in just a few paragraphs. After all, the musicians and bands are chosen for their unique qualities. The SummerJazzCycleTour this year features bands from 7 different countries, spanning 3 continents:
Brazil: Duo Sean Bergin/Ricardo Bicudo, Luanda Casella in the remake of Bitches Brew and Diana Miranda with the Mike Del Ferro Trio. United States: Marty Krystall, Nate McBride, Matt Darriau and Katie Down. England: Maggie Nicols, Delta Saxophone Quartet, Hugh Hopper and Aleksander Kolkowski. France: melc and Jean-Louis Matinier. Germany: Ute Wassermann, Achim Kaufmann, Michael Riessler and Tobias Delius. Belgium: Trio Florizoone / Massot / Horbaczewski , Moker and Grazzhoppa. And from the Netherlands: new bands like Estafest, Talking Cows, Eric Boeren News, Rubatong, Andy Bruce & the Rigidly Righeous and Bitches Brew part 4.
The SummerJazzCycleTour will start with a Prologue at the Noorderzon festival.
