Intro

The 25th SummerJazzCycleTour takes us one generation of jazz lovers further, but new jazz is still being explored on bike. The musical cycling adventure in the beautiful scenery of the Reitdiep valley with concerts in beautiful old churches and barns gets people from all directions moving. In order to give the jazz cyclers more room, the number of cycling routes has been extended from four to five.

The Berlin route

This anniversary edition pays special attention to the new jazz scene in Berlin, where a number of fantastic musicians have settled these past few years. The Berlin route offers familiar faces as well as new surprises: clarinettist Claudio Puntin's Trio Dolce Vita, presents a tribute to film composer Nino Rota. Cellist Tristan Honsinger, who has moved to Berlin too, presents his new quartet Hook, Line & Sinker (Dutch premiere). Saxophonist Tobias Delius (who has been living in the German capital for quite a while) is present with his international trio Booklet. Kreuzberg born tenorist Thomas Borgmann performs with Boombox. This route also offers the sparkling young trio Hyperactive Kid,and reed player Gebhard Ullmann Ullmann takes on two double bassists in BASSX3.

Special project

As a special project both at the Friday Prologue and at the Saturday cycle tour we present De Jongens Driest have performed at the Groningen festivals (ZJFT, Les Trois Jours and De Drie Dagen) over the years: the Sicilian trumpeter Roy Paci, alto saxophonist/clarinettist Matt DarriauDarriau from Brooklyn, New York and drummer Michael Vatcher. beatmaster C-mon is added to this special line-up.

Prologue

As a kick-off to the SummerJazzCycleTour there is the Prologue on Friday 26 August, once again at Theater De Machinefabriek. This year three great acts are featured.
In addition to De Jongens Driest Allstars there will be a performance by Swiss vocal sensation Erika Stucky and the energetic The Ex & Brass Unbound. The pride of Dutch PunkJazz performs with a heavy horn section featuring Mats Gustafsson, Ken Vandermark, Roy Paci and Wolter Wierbos.

Pianists

On Saturday 27 August three foreign pianists can be heard in the Humsterland. Two from England: Veryan Weston (with Trevor Watts) and Alex Maguire (with Sean Bergin). And Berlin pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach will be performing with the Italian reedist Daniele D'Agaro and drummer Han Bennink.

String players

The cycle tour programme offers quite a number of string players this time. On cello there is Tristan Honsinger and of course Ernst Reijseger (with Franky Douglas and Lesley Joseph). From Ghent cellist Lode Vercampt with Bart Maris. Then there are two violinists of the Zapp Quartet at work: Oene van Geel with The Nordanians and Jasper le Clercq performing with his own quartet.

Bass tip

the Feerwerd church is the place to be for lovers of the double bass: Wilbert de Joode performs as a duo with the Korean cellist Okkyung Lee. Later in the day there is BASSX3 featuring bassists Chris Dahlgren and Antonio Borghini. Earlier in the day New York (bass) clarinettist Ned Rothenberg offers a solo concert in Den Ham.

From Groningen

The city of Groningen offers three groups this time. Gerard Ammerlaan's workshop band The S!lHarmonics, a quartet featuring Groningen jazz greats Bé Meiborg, Winfred Buma, Bert van Erk with American drummer Steve Altenberg. And of course the special project with De Jongens Driest Allstars.  Then there are performances by the Dutch bands Pow Ensemble, Spoon3+1Fork, Dimami, duo Michel Duijves/Paul Pallesen and I Compani Quintessence.

Belgium

There are two important musical leaders from Belgium with large ensembles. Hans's impressive barn features Peter Vermeersch and his Flat Earth Society (from Ghent) and the festival finale in Garnwerd sports Luc Mishalle and his Marockin’ Brass (from Brussels).

Tribute

At the request of the SummerJazzCycleTour one of the greatest modern Dutch jazz albums is the subject of a tribute by the Dutch Impro Academy. The 25th edition will feature Sean Bergin compositions from the 1988 album Kids Mysteries, Sean Bergin's MOB's debut recording (Nimbus Records).

Once again we would like to thank all of the volunteers who will be active on this last Saturday in August. Without their effort and energy 25 years of SummerJazzCycleTour wouldn't have been possible.
We dedicate this anniversary edition to Laurens Smit Duyzentkunst (1948-2011), the festival's diesel motor from the very first mile.
