FRIDAY 28 AUGUST PROLOGUE AT NOORDERZON
SATURDAY 29 AUGUSTUS 23rd SummerJazzCycleTour
INTRO
A musical cycling adventure amidst the beautiful landscape of the Reitdiep valley with performances in medieval churches and farmers' barns. A cycling feast with a varied international programme of contemporary jazz and improvisation music. The 23rd SummerJazzCycleTour is a tested and tried concept to explore new jazz on bike.
In this edition strings will receive special attention. Exceptional musicians with string instruments can be discovered in two large string orchestras lead by violist Maurice Horsthuis (Elastic Jargon) and cellist Tristan Honsinger (Seven Seas Orchestra), but also in smaller formations: Haytham Safia (ud), Jozef van Wissem (lute), Paolo Angeli (prepared Sardinian guitar), Esther Steenbergen (classical guitar), Gerard Ammerlaan's ARKHO and the Paul Berner Band (electric guitars), Oene van Geel (violin), Mary Oliver and Johanna Varner (violin and cello) and B3B, the double bass duo of Paul Rogers (seven string bass), and Wilbert de Joode with pianist Fred van Hove. On cycling route 1, the String Route, you're likely to meet many of these musicians.
The SummerJazzCycleTour also highlights a number of young jazz musicians. Starting with the German trio Three Fall to French hornist Morris Kliphuis in the trio Kliphuis/De Moraes&Menting, via alto saxophonist Joris Roelofs' trio with guitarist Jesse van Ruller, to trumpeter Sanne van Hek with The Black Napkins, to alto saxophonist Ben van Gelder with pianist Harmen Fraanje and finally Knalpot's noisy impro techno.
Cycling Route 3 could be made into a Young Turks Route. The jazz cycler does not have to limit himself to the routes.
You can also pick your own track. Tip: don't forget to visit the Dutch Impro Academy with sessions lead by Han Bennink, Peter van Bergen, Cor Fuhler, Wilbert de Joode, Tristan Honsinger and Wolter Wierbos. Do check out Sean Bergin's Engelbewaarder quartet, or Mola Sylla's new band. And then there is Ab Baars solo and the latest Boy Edgar Prize laureate Ernst Glerum with Omnibus. And of course the New York Claudia Quintet lead by drummer John Hollenbeck. As impossible as it is to cycle past all 26 concerts, it is even more so to summarize them in a couple of paragraphs.

On the eve of the 23rd SummerJazzCycleTour you can test your stamina at the Prologue at the Noorderzon Performing Arts Festival Groningen. On Friday 29 August the SummerJazzCycleTour presents a fantastic double programme in the NNT Machinefabriek, home to the Noord Nederlands Toneel theatre company. The evening opens with a unique musical meeting by Japanese pianist Aki Takase and French clarinettist Louis Sclavis. Both are voracious instrumentalists and have built an important international reputation. They can be heard together for the first time on a Dutch stage. The Aki Takase/Louis Sclavis duo offers two great musicians playing cutting edge music.
In the early eighties Available Jelly started out as a merry street band for Americans in Amsterdam. It is now filled to the brim with the cream of the crop of the Amsterdam jazz scene. The all star septet's book contains highly original originals as well as brilliantly played Ellington pieces. Remarkable is trumpeter Jimmy Sernesky's and Berlin based tenor saxophonist Tobias Delius' one-off comeback, making for all of the ingredients for a full blooded finale.
