THREE FALL (D)

Lutz Streun – tenor sax, bass clarinet
Til Schneider – trombone
Sebastian Winne – drums

The threesome Three Fall met in funk bands and studied at conservatories in Cologne and Arnhem. Without a bass or a harmony instrument the young German trio ventures into the unknown, resulting in a remarkably fresh music. What stands out is trombonist Til Schneider's multiphonics, making him  a new member of the strong German trombone tradition (Albert Mangelsdorff, Conrad and Johannes Bauer, Nils Wogram).

Now it is saxophonist Tineke Postma who tries her hand at Haytham Safia's Arab crossover music.

His drumless trio in the Adorp church features Jesse van Ruller (yet another prodigy) and bassist Clemens van der Feen.

Morris Kliphuis – French horn
Daniel de Moraes – guitar
Remco Menting -- snare drum

Morris Kliphuis (1986) is a French hornist. The French horn is a rare instrument in jazz.
He is a busy man, for he is also a member of hiphopper Kyteman's wind section, but  in Kliphuis/De Moraes&Menting the accent is on  jazz. The trio features Portuguese guitarist Daniel de Moraes en Remco Menting, who grew up on the river Vecht, across from Han Bennink's houseboat, and now obviously plays the snare drum.

Daniel de Moraes will be replaced by gitarist Maarten van der Grinten

THE BLACK NAPKINS (NL)

Sanne van Hek – trumpet, electronics
Jasper Stadhouders --  guitar, electronics
Gerri Jäger – drums, electronics

The Black Napkins are in search of sounds. The young, unconventional guitarist Jasper Stadhouders (1989) makes use of various guitar styles, and likes to layer patterns and riffs. The boisterous drummer Gerri Jäger provides the accents, and trumpeter Sanne van Hek colours with her velvet tones. The band will tour The Netherlands this year as part of the Young VIPS tour.

13.30    14.45    Aduard factory

ESTHER STEENBERGEN TRIO (NL)

Esther Steenbergen – guitar
Eric Calmes – bass
Enrique Firpi – percussion

In 2005 Esther Steenbergen formed her own trio to play her own compositions and pieces written especially for her, as well as surprising interpretations of repertoire written originally for classical guitar. With experienced bassist Eric Calmes and percussionist Enrique Firpi she presents her own take on the classical guitar.

1st set   2nd set
13.45    15.00    Harkema

JOZEF VAN WISSEM (NL)

Jozef van Wissem – lute

Taking renaissance lute playing as his starting point Jozef van Wissem extended his repertoire to combinations of 20th century minimal music and even electronics. He regularly plays with former Captain Beefheart guitarist Gary Lucas. But in Jozef van Wissem's solo concerts a quiet, meditative atmosphere prevails.

Augusto Forti from Florence has been living in Amsterdam for ages . His band Gravitones was a guest at the SummerJazzCycleTour before. He now offers a trio, which will play pared down versions of his compositions. It features a remarkable instrumentation: clarinet (Augusto Forti), tuba (Larry Fishkind) and percussion (Alan Purves). The threesome will undoubtedly come up with some highly entertaining moments.

ORUGA FEAT. OENE VAN GEEL & WOLTER WIERBOS (NL)

Wolter Wierbos – trombone; Oene van Geel – violin
Mark Tuinstra – guitar; Jasper de Beer – bass guitar
Yonga Sun – drums

Inspired by the marvellous CD series Ethiopiques Mark Tuinstra and Jasper de Beer (Bernie’s Lounge) started an 'Ethiopian' band with Yonga Sun (Talking Cows), which will
be extended with two formidable soloists, especially for this SummerJazzCycleTour: violinist Oene van Geel and trombonist Wolter Wierbos. Whether it will still sound Ethiopian remains to be seen, but Oruga firmly embraces the camel beat.

14.15    15.30    Den Ham church

MARY OLIVER / JOHANNA VARNER (VS/G)

Mary Oliver – violin, viola
Johanna Varner – cello

American violinist Mary Oliver is best known for her association with the ICP Orchestra. She also works with dancers and improvising musicians in Magpie. The improv duo with Munich based celiist Johanna Verner is largely unknown in the Netherlands. This spring they released the CD JOMO, which has the duo playing arco and pizzicato on the borderline between composition and improvisation.

1ste set  2nd set

14.30    15.45    Feerwerd church

AB BAARS (NL)

Ab Baars –  tenorsax, clarinet, shakuhachi

'Ab music' is what pianist Misha Mengelberg said when asked to characterize Ab Baars' saxophone playing. The ICP Orchestra also features Ab baars' clarinet, influenced by the great John Carter. On tenor sax shimmers of the sound of  Roscoe Mitchell (Art Ensemble of Chicago) can be heard. After having presented trombonist Joost Buis and reedist Ken Vandermark as guests with his trio, Ab Baars now presents a new solo CD with 'Ab music' in Feerwerd.

1st set   2nd set

B3B: PAUL ROGERS / FRED VAN HOVE / WILBERT DE JOODE (UK/B/NL)

Paul Rogers – double bass
Fred van Hove – piano
Wilbert De Joode – double bass

'B3B – a trio in which the piano is sandwiched between two basses; the final B should be in reverse, but that doesn't work on this keyboard.' Those are the words of the Antwerp piano giant Fred van Hove. He is flanked by Britsh bassist Paul Rogers, who played with pianists like Keith Tippett and Sophia Domancich, and Wilbert de Joode, Michiel Braam's regular bassist.

The rock-steady bassist from the Amsterdam jazz scene (from ICP to Benjamin Herman) will do a tour this fall featuring young musicians, in Glerum Omnibus. A preview of Glerum's new trio can be heard in Garnwerd, where his qualities as a composer will also come to the fore.

15.15    16.30    Den Ham barn

PAUL BERNER BAND (US/NL)

Michael Moore – alto sax, clarinet
Peter Tiehuis, Ed Verhoef – guitar
Paul Berner – double bass

Clarinetist and alto saxophonist Michael Moore (ICP, Available Jelly)  clearly feels at home in the Paul Berner Band. His melancholic solos perfectly fit Berner's relaxed mix of jazz and Amrricana. In the eighties bassist Paul Berner, like Moore also from California, played with the Lionel Hampton Band (with Arnett Cobb in its ranks) and Monty Alexander before moving to Amsterdam. In his music he seems to yearn for the prairie.

1st set   2nd set

15.30    16.45    Ezinge church

DUTCH IMPRO ACADEMY

Presentation of a week of improvising by international musicians guided by Han Bennink, Peter van Bergen, Cor Fuhler, Wilbert de Joode, Tristan Honsinger and Wolter Wierbos.

GERARD AMMERLAAN ARKHO (NL)

Wietze Koning, Thomas Hilbrandie, Dick Rusticus – guitar
Gerard Ammerlaan – bass guitar, Jeroen van Olphen – drums

Gerard Ammerlaans new band ARKHO makes exciting music. Unusual compositions are mixed with jazzrock type improvisations. The ARKHO sound wth three electric guitars sometimes reminds one of King Crimson, but this band goes further. Bassist and composer Gerard Ammerlaan made his mark in the Noodband, Greetje Bijma Quintet  and his own formations like Ammerlaans Quartet/Octet.

1st set   2nd set

Ben van Gelder – alto sax
Harmen Fraanje – piano
Clemens van der Feen – double bass

Things are going well for Groningen alto saxophonist Ben van Gelder (1988). He keeps winning prizes and is living in New York these days. Ben van Gelder composed a special trio for the SummerJazzCycleTour featuring pianist Harmen Franje and bassist Clemens van der Feen.  Has Ben van Gelder been able to deepen his Art Pepper-like sound in the New York jazz clubs, or does he sound completely different now?

SEAN BERGIN QUARTET (NL)

Sean Bergin – soprano and tenor sax;

Leo Bouwmeester – piano

Victor de Boo – drums

Saxophonist Sean Bergin (Durban 1948) came to the Netherlands in 1975 and was soon incorporated in  Misha Mengelberg's  Instant Composers Pool, where his typical South-African kwela melodies were introduced into the musical mix. In 1986 he started his own large group, MOB (My Own Band), followed by Nansika, SongMOB and his duo with Brazilian guitarist Rogerio Bicudo. Sean Bergin is a regular guest at the SummerJazzCycleTour. He is now featured with a quartet that has the Amsterdam bar De Engelbewaarder as its home base.

Singer Una Bergin will be added to the band as a special guest.

She has been the kingpin in projects featuring the music of Fats Waller, Ornette Coleman and Eric Dolphy. In Aki and The Good Boys she has assembled the best musicians of the Berlin modern jazz scene: bass clarinettist Rudi Mahall and... Tobias Delius!

Extremely loud, but at a certain moment  it gets too heavy, and the volume is taken down a little... well, just for a few seconds.' KNALPOT: 'It's live very different from the CD. We have a soundman who makes sure the sound  doesn't hurt, but that the music feels all right.'

But now the singer from Senegal also has his own band, with some familiar faces for SummerJazzCycleTour regulars, like Alexei Levin (Vershki Da Koreshki / VeDaKi) and percussionist Serigne Gueye. The chances are that you will find a joyful African dance party in Hans's barn, everyone dancing to the Molla Sylla Band.

1st set   2nd set

17.45    19.00    Feerwerd church

PAOLO ANGELI (I)

Paolo Angeli – prepared Sardinian guitar

“The Sardinian guitar is made in Sicily...and prepared in Bologna.” Paolo Angeli moved from Sardinia to Bologna, where he met a flourishing music scene. Paolo Angeli  started preparing his guitar with hammers and small ventilators, thus developing his present instrument, with which he has hooked on to the international avant garde scene (Elliott Sharp, Fred Frith, Evan Parker). And his music? It is of an enchanting beauty.
