INSTRUCTIONS

The 22nd  SummerJazzCycleTour's programme offers 27 concerts at 22 venues. It starts on Saturday 30 August  at 12.30 hrs amd the final concert ends at midnight. This year two new locations have joined. The church at Dorkwerd (to the north of the city), and the barn in Saaksum is back on track. The idea is to make choices, as it is impossible to attend all concerts.

FOUR STARTING POINTS

There are four starting points. These are the only places where go-as-you-please tickets are sold and reservations may be collected. The special SummerJazzCycleTour T-shirts are also on sale here.

GARNWERD TENT AS CENTRAL LOCATION

The tent near the windmill in Garnwerd is open all day for ticket sales, information, coffee and rolls. The first aid team is also on post here.
In the afternoon the tent is also the starting point for the Loos Soundart Tour.
At 20.00 hrs there will be a swinging battle of the 78s between Swingmaster Sem and Yeah Man. The 22nd SummerJazzCycleTour will be concluded by the Balkan Blues Brothers, the Carlama Orkestar.

TWO SETS

Performances start strictly on time. Every band plays two 45 minute sets. The sets are indicated in the timetable as concert 1 and concert 2. Between sets there will be a 30 minute interval. This may be used to cycle to the next venue.

TIP

You can start at every second set. Second sets often prove to be less crowded.

FULL=FULL!

If you're very keen on attending a concert, make sure you are there early, because full=full!

URGENT PLEA

Pick a convenient moment to walk in and out, for instance during the applause, so as not to disturbe the musicians' and audience's concentration.

CATERING

Nearly all concert venues offer snacks and drinks of some sort. From homemade soup to all sorts of savoury pies.
At the end of the SummerJazzCycleTour catering service 't Kookpunt serves up a delicious meal in the Garnwerd tent between 18.00 and 22.00 hrs. For only € 7.50 three types of paella can be obtained: chicken fish and vegetarian. The tent can be found opposite the windmill.

REACTIONS

We are very interested in your experiences, remarks, criticism, compliments, anecdotes, suggestions and digital photographs and films. You can mail your reactions to reacties@zjft.nl.

DVD 'SummerJazzCycleTour', music for cycling landscapes'

In this documentary film makers Nathalie Alonso Casale and Matt Dray have brilliantly managed to capture the essence of the SummerJazzCycleTour. Not only do they give an impression of the landscape and the churches where the festival is held, illustrated by music, but they also show with how much fun and enthusiasm all of the volunteers shape the event. These images are interspersed with carefully picked concert footage, offering the viewer an earful of the exciting music that the SummerJazzCycleTour has to offer. Sandwiched in between are interviews with enthusiastic musicians (Evan Parker, Han Bennink,  Ernst Reijseger and others) and with the festival's 'mother'. Thus the film is a beautiful, powerful and above all gripping summary of the history of the SummerJazzCycleTour.
Film maker Nathalie Alonso Casale  was born in Paris. She studied at the Amsterdam Film School, and in 1992 her exam film 'Memorias sin Batallas y otros muertos' received a Gouden Kalf (the Dutch Oscar), as well as the Canon Tuschinski Award. Her more recent films also received awards, including nominations for the  Gouden Kalf and Tiger Awards (Rotterdam filmfestival). Nathalie also made various succesful documentaries in Russia. For the production of her own films she founded Titanic Productions in 1996. This company also released the film  'SummerJazzCycleTour', music for cycling landscapes'.

The DVD 'SummerJazzCycleTour', music for cycling landscapes' can be bought online for € 19.95 (plus shipping costs) at www.zjft.nl

In 1997 the Stichting Oude Groninger Kerken (Ancient Groningen Churches Foundation) and the SummerJazzCycleTour (then Stichting Cu-re) joined forces in organizing the SummerJazzCycleTour. The  Stichting Oude Groninger Kerken offered its buildings for concerts of jazz and improvised music. The young organization took care of programming, production and cycling route. And succesfully so! For 22 last Saturdays in August the cycling audience has been taken along in the musical landscape of the Reitdiep valley. The gorgeous medieval Groningen churches are an essential backdrop and an indispensable ingredient to this exceptional event.
The SummerJazzCycleTour is made possible by the Stichting Oude Groninger Kerken. This foundation has been keeping up historic church buildings in the province of Groningen for the past  39 years, and promotes the interest in them. It manages 58 churches in all. Groningen has a great many beautiful old churches that all tell a great deal about the province and its rich history.
